Spring 2020 Updated Assignments
(May 11, 2020)
I have updated all remote learning grades up to this point. I have put a category in there called "March 13 Official Grade."
All of our grades have to be backdated prior to March 13, so ignore the due dates listed on there.
You will have the choice of taking a "Pass" for the class (PC-19) and if you do this, no paperwork will be necessary from you.
You will also have the choice of taking the course for a numerical average, if you do that, there will be a form to fill out declaring you want your average on your report card.
At this moment we don't have the form/link available yet, so pay attention for more information about that.
Along with the required form that will come out soon, please notify me at [email protected] if you intend to use your numerical average. So you will need to do 2 things: The form and email me. You can email me starting today if you already know you are wanting your numerical average, but you will still have to do the form when it is offered.
If you want to pull your grade up, there is one more assignment offered and it is due on May 20 (optional assignment / see below).
Office Hours M-Th 1:00-2:00 & Friday 10:00-11:00 (I will be actively checking and responding to email during this time)
If we need to do a small group google meet, then I will set something up on here with the address needed to join in or I'll send something to the people who want to meet. Note: WCPSS has told us to not meet with just one person in a life video chat, so if a chat is something that happens, it will be a small group thing. If something on here isn't clear, please email me and I'll clarify through email and update it on here as well. If it gets too confusing, I'll set up a google meet with the group to clarify.
Assignments: Please film your speeches and turn in the final copies through google drive.
Note: If you had finished your persuasive speech and not actually presented it yet, you may substitute that speech for either assignment 2 or assignment 3 of these speeches. If you do that option, you will need to film the speech and show your powerpoint and all that too. Note, you will have to decide how to best film these and get them to me, I'll definitely provide feedback. I'd suggest showing your powerpoint and presenting with the powerpoint just as you would in class. This would require someone else to actually do the filming. Honestly though, that will be what you need to figure out.
Assignment 1 (Due April 21):
The Pandemic from your perspective: I'd like for you to work on a presentation about your thoughts about where we are right now as a society and /or where you are right now with your thought and experiences of living through a pandemic . You have the freedom to organize this how you want. How is society doing? How are you doing? What are your thoughts about life and what is happening now? Whatever you want to share. Be insightful, thoughtful, be sincere. What are some things you've seen, events you've heard about, experiences you've had, sights you've seen through this time that you will always remember and will share with your kids and grandkids one day. Videotape a 4-6 minute presentation. You can use powerpoint and videos / news footage etc. to complete this information.
Email/Share: [email protected]
Assignment 2 (Due May 8):
Greatest Movie / TV Show Speech: I'm sure you have had plenty of time to watch all the Netflix and Amazon Prime movies that you could ever have wanted to watch, so you should be good and ready to take on this next topic. My only hope as far as movies go is that we are through with the need to social distance and that Top Gun II will be ready to play for open theatres at the end of June. What I'd like for you to do is to do a 4.5-7.0 minute presentation about a movie or TV series that you consider to be the "Greatest of All-Time." I'd like for you persuade me why this movie/series is the greatest of all-time. What are your favorite scenes? What makes this movie the best? You will want to persuade me and talk about why this is "the best" movie. Show some clips of the best scenes. A fatal mistake in this presentation is to give me a character listing. No explaining the characters for more than 45 seconds of this presentation. Instead, focus on persuading me why this is the greatest. Note: Anyone who tries to convince me that the Tiger King is the best will automatically fail this class and I may pursue getting you held back to repeat your current grade. :)
Videotape this presentation. You can will want to use Powerpoint and also show some school appropriate best/memorable scenes.
Email/Share: [email protected]
Assignment 3 -optional (Due May 20) Guilty Pleasure Song Speech:
What is that song that you listen to that you don't want any others knowing about? This is the song that has your heart, but nobody else knows that? We all have them. For me it's songs from Les Miserables or The Sound of Music among many others. In this speech I'd like you to discuss the song, explain why you like it, maybe when you listen to it, what is your reaction when you hear it. Does it remind you of any special moments or events? Have you ever been "caught" listening to it? What lines are especially strong? Remember, this must be school appropriate in word choice and subject matter.

Dear Speech Class,
On our last day we still had some persuasive speeches to present and I believe that Meb was supposed to bring the class some cookies (I didn't forget that Meb). However, as we all know, our sense of security in everything that we knew to be "rights of passage" has changed. As I'm writing this on 4/6/20, I am still hopeful that we have our prom in June, that we will be able to play some more athletic events, that we will be able to have a graduation. Most importantly, I am hoping that I get a chance to be with my students in class again. In our short time together, I got to see you grow, I got to learn about your interests, I got to see your wit and your intelligence. I saw some of you take this class as a challenge and absolutely attack getting better each presentation, I got to see some of you go all-out and see what it's like when you not only impress me, but your classmates as well. I also found out that persuading us that Chik-Fil-A is the best by bringing in product, is very effective. I got to teach some of you a second time and see how much you each have grown to wonderful people. I got to teach some of you for the first time and how can I grow to care about people so strongly in such a short amount of time? To the underclassmen, I certainly hope that you will take my class again before you graduate. If you are unable to take speech again due to a full schedule, I certainly understand and will always regret that our time together in Speech was cut short. To my seniors, I'm heartbroken. Selfishly I'm heartbroken because I can't teach you again. Some of you have told me since August how excited you were to be in this class and it just bothers me that we weren't together longer. I'm also heartbroken that you are going through this during your senior year. I have no idea what the next two months have in store for us, but I can assure you that our staff at Apex High School will do all we are allowed to do for you to maybe have some sense of normalcy when it is safe and allowable to do so.
I usually say this the last day of class, but I want to make sure it's out there. Once you have me for one class and even if it is just for one day, you will always be my students and I will always be here for you. I keep up with my students. My pride in you, feelings for you, and sincere interest in seeing you happy and successful is a rest of our life deal. As long as I'm able, I will always be willing to help you in any way possible. God gives different people different strengths. I'm honestly not good at a lot or outstanding at anything, but one. God gave me an ability to care for others and a sincere interest in wanting to help and to love others. I mean, I wish I could sing well, or draw well, or play an instrument, but caring for others and loving others was what I ended up with. Therefore, it's important to me that you know I'm always willing to step up to connect with you, to support you, to listen to you. No matter what happens from here with class and school and all that, I just want y'all to know that I enjoyed every single one of you in my class and your presence in our class made a positive impression on me.
I saw a sign in downtown Apex today that read, "Today is not forever." We will get through this and we will get our "normal" back at some point. Until then, please take care of yourselves and those around you. We've all be impacted by this financially, spiritually, emotionally, and it takes a toll on our mental outlook on things. However, we will get through this and this will be a story to share with your grandkids one day. Hang in there.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ferg

Fun Things to Do From Home
This list was provided by Coach Roy Cooper (not the governor):
If you are looking for some good news, then you might want to check out John Krasinski's "Some Good News" (just google John Krasinski Some Good News). He has two episodes out and it is just fun stuff that is uplifting. Check out episode two about half way through if you are a fan of the musical "Hamilton." There is a fun surprise for a girl involving the play.
Finally, I'm passing a long a list of free stuff you can do on your computer or phone that is not related to my class but which could educate you in different, fun ways. Obviously, I do not know your taste, so explore anything that seems to strike your interest.
1) Google Art and Culture website has free virtual tours of museums and places from around the world. If you are logged in on your school google account, then you can explore all sorts of things. I was looking at a 360 degree view from the top of Mt. Blanc this morning. Kind of cool.
2) Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (google that topic) has virtual tours of many of their exhibits. You can pick from dozens and dozens of their exhibits. It allows you to use your mouse and look around as if you were standing in the museum looking at the exhibit.
3) Both the San Diego Zoo and the Monterrey Bay Aquarium have live feeds from some of their exhibits. Google either name and scroll down to find the live feeds. I watched the penguins getting fed at the San Diego Zoo and the sea otters getting fed at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium this morning. Quite fun.
4) BroadwayHD.com has a free 7 day trial that you can sign up for which allows you to see many Broadway plays. Check with your parents first, as you may have to opt out of the account after you finish the 7 day trial.
5) Duolingo has free foreign language courses that you can take online. I do not know much about this website, but I'm going to go back to explore it.
6) Fender (google Fender) has 3 months of free guitar lessons online. Of course, you would need a guitar, so this might not apply to you. But if you have one and have been meaning to learn how to play, this is your chance!
7) Milk Street (google Milk Street, it's a Boston restaurant) has free cooking classes, though it only lasts through the month of April 2020. You have to scroll down to find the classes. And, of course, you would need the ingredients in order to be able to make the recipe.
8) NC Museum of History has the ability to explore some of their exhibits from home. Google: ncmuseumofhistory.org/history-at-home
9) The NC Symphony has a free 33 minute digital broadcast of their educational concert. Google: ncsymphony.org/virtual/ - the password is: 1932
10) I have not looked into this yet, but evidently the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB all have free access to some of their classic games.
11) Finally, Google Earth allows you to tour any of our national parks (Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Glacier, etc.) which might be fun for your "spring break vacation" plans.
Hope this gives you something fun to do. Feel free to share with others.

Persuasive Speech
Assignment Rubric for the persuasive speech.
The time range for this speech is 3.0 - 5.0 minutes.
There should be some topics listed on the assignment rubric. One that you could add is: How advertisements do/do not sent unhealthy signals to America's youth.
This is good list with examples/uploads/6/8/3/6/68366239/speech__persuasion_examples_to_keep_on_blackboard_.doc and explanations of the most common types of persuasion. You may want to refer to these when writing speeches. I'll keep this on here for the entire semester.

2-Minute Drill (Small Group)
The point in this exercise is to emphasize the ability to think quickly, to divide a topic into two or more main points, and to apply one’s present knowledge to a speech topic for 2-4 minutes. You are expected to competently deliver the speech with specific components that we have learned and practiced in this class. You are also supposed to listen to your classmates and offer helpful feedback for them. Sometimes you will do these in small groups and sometimes we will call you to the front of the class and assign you a topic for an impromptu speech.
-One person stands up (Yes, you must stand to get credit).
-The person gets 3 topics from group member.
-The person has one-minute to formulate a speech with intro / good content / transitions / proper closure that doesn't drop the audience.
-One person will time and raise her/his hand once the person has hit the two minute mark and the speaker will begin to wrap it up within the next 2 minutes.
-The person will sit down and receive feedback from the audience on the delivery (volume, pace, eye contact, body language etc)
You will lose class participation points if you are doing the following:
Not paying attention during a classmate's presentation, not giving sincere feedback, using phone for texting/social media, not being on-task,
not giving your best effort during a speech (not trying), sitting around between presentations without someone immediately continuing the process.
Discussing a topic that isn't school appropriate, using profanity.
Can you use technology at all? Yes, if it fits. If you are talking about your favorite song or scene from a show, if it is on low-volume, it may be ok to use technology if you get permission before doing it..
Otherwise, this isn't a speech you use with props etc.
Click here for a Two-minute Drill rubric and a list of other topic choices.
Make these fun & interesting. (Best movie you've seen recently, a reflection of sports season, favorite band, favorite song, best concert you've been to, a current event,
a school event, the big game/performance that just happened or is going to happen, best school memory, funny family story, what you want to do in school next year, most unique talent, what you did last weekend, ideal date, thing you are most proud of, thing you are interested in,what you are doing cool in the future, favorite tv episode, life hack tips, best date, favorite movie characters, etc).
You can go a lot of ways with this. For example, if someone says as a possible topic, "Harry Potter." I could talk about the movies, or the books, the characters, or even my personal memories that I had with my family about going to the midnight premiers or Harry Potter World. You get the topic and make it work for you in the most interesting way.
2-Minute Drill (Scary Event)
You should create a typed rubric checklist with the following:
Intro / Organization / Conclusion / Energy / Body Movement / Eye Contact (consistently looking around whole room) / Volume / Pace / Voice Fluctuation
No Props or audio/visual aids.
Required to use the checklist components to form a coherent speech that is 2:45-5:30 minutes, but if you are telling a campfire story, it may go longer as long as it is worth it. If it is boring and rambling and could have ended earlier, then there will be points deducted.
Note: Automatic 10-point deduction for not meeting the time range in a coherent, non-rambling fashion.
“I don’t normally believe in ghosts but…”
“This is something scary that happened to me…”
"This is something scary that happened to someone in my family..."
“I am going to share the best ghost/campfire story that I’ve heard…”
“Let me tell you my favorite ghost story…”
NOTE: If you choose one of the last two topics, you are expected to sign-up for that topic with Mr. Ferg so that two people don't have the same topic.

Note: I will adjust the time on this. I will let you know in class how long I expect this presentation to be.
For this presentation you may work in groups of 2-3 people. I want depth with this presentation and not a listing of things that I could find in a book. You may add videos, commercials, and movie trailers and other interesting information about KEY events.
