Night Writing Assignment
For the Night responses, divide your book into thirds and type your responses.
Honors: (36 point HW Grade OR DOUBLE Quiz Grade...I will let you know.)
Honors level students, your final homework assignment should look like this.
For each 1/3 section of your book...
- 1 ( typed deep or shaded question),
- One memorable/interesting passage (4-6 lines) & a 5-6 sentence explanation of why you selected that passage (Put the page number with the passage)
- 1 ACE / Strong Answer Response paragraph response based on the claim (10-12 Sentences)
- This should be typed.
- Each response should be typed and clearly labeled “ Shaded Question,” “Interesting Passage,” and “Strong Answer Response.”
**Note: I want each response to be about a different aspect of the book. So, don’t write a question about the same thing you are quoting and writing a strong answer response about. 3 separate things for each part.**
**Note: Your written responses should NOT sound like anything any of your classmates have written. This is individual work and should represent your own unique thoughts and ideas.
Non Honors: (36 Point HW Grade OR DOUBLE Quiz Grade...I will let you know.)
Non Honors students, your final homework assignment should look like this.
For each 1/3 section of your book...
- Two memorable/interesting passages (4-6 lines) & a 5-6 sentence explanation of why you selected that passage (Typed & Put the page number with the passage)
-One thoughtful / insightful question/observation (something that isn't a "no duh" obsrervation) or a Third memorable/interesting passage that you explain.
Note: Each question should be set up by what you saw in the passage. Set the question up and then come in with an insightful question.
Note: If other classmates in the class share the same question, how insightful and personal is that question?
Not Good: Why are wars bad?
Better: In chapter one we see this… based on this, what do you think (or what would you do or explain what you would)
I don’t want a generic question that could be asked without reading the passage. Your question must reflect that you read the chapter and relate to specific events, ideas, themes, insights and thoughts from that chapter and be explained by your chapter
Your questions, insights, comments, and observations should undoubtedly be your own and resemble nothing similar to a classmate's response.

Human Rights Essays
Human Rights Project: Editorial Paragraph Assignments
Directions: Each editorial will be counted as a ten-point HW grade and each will be checked on the due date. Then, all three editorials will be turned in with your speech rubric/slides/ and one “Works Cited” on your speech presentation due date. Please pay attention to your speech rubric for clarification.
Format:
- 1.5-2.0 Pages (Double-Spaced)
-1 inch margins / Times New Roman size 12
-MLA Header and Title are Present
-Each part of the SAR is labeled.
-The essay is typed (Double Space)
Editorial Paragraph 1 Due:__________________________________________
Human Rights Project Editorial Paragraph 1:
Write a Strong Answer Response Paragraph (1.5-2.0 pages) stating your topic and your organization, explaining why you selected your topic/organization, and explaining how your topic/organization relates to specific parts of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Show me why this topic interests you. You can use first person in this. Label SAR / ACE parts.
Editorial Paragraph 2 Due:__________________________________________
Editorial #2 (1.5-2.0 pages): In Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Oedipus was ignorant to his own reality just as today ignorance (or lack of understanding) is a common reason why someone may not support a cause. In Julius Caesar and in Cyrano de Bergerac, we see the power of the spoken word in persuading people to move to action. In A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah presents issues in the world that many do not know even exist and shows us how people have the capacity to change others’ lives.
What I’d like for you to do is to write a SAR that explains how people who aren’t familiar or associated with your cause (those who are blind to the need) might come to see the need to support this cause in a different light. What is the problem as it exists now? How can you convince us to see things differently so that we support your cause and become agents of change?
You can use first person in this. Label SAR/ACE parts.
Editorial Paragraph 3 Due:__________________________________________
Editorial 3 (1.5-2.0 pages): In Night Elie Wiesel and in A Long Way Gone, the texts show us that we need to have empathy for others, we need provide support for those who need strength, and we need to provide a voice for those in need. Explain in a SAR/ACE response how we can do this by supporting your cause. Also, explain what your action step is going to be. When we are moved to act for your cause, what can we do? How can we act? How are you planning on taking this to the next level (beyond a speech for English class)? The action step should be feasible, should be thoughtful, and it should be helpful. Whatever it is, make it real and meaningful. You can use first person in this writing.
Essay Group Discussion (Class Participation Grade):
-In each session students will get in groups of 4 (we will mix groups up each time we do this activity).
-Each student silently reads each classmate's essay and writes notes based on the "Starters."
-Once each person has read everyone's essay, the students then talk about each essay (one person's at a time).
-Each student should take notes on the verbal feedback he/she gets from the group members.
-For each essay, I will expect to see your feedback notes written on the paper when you turn it in.
-The goal of this activity is to help the reader find what others are interested in about the topic so that the student can use this info. as a guide in preparing
for the presentation.
Starters:
- "Did you think about this.?"
- "I'd like to know more about..."
- "Something you might want to address / clarify / mention is this..."
- "I think it would be interesting if..."
- "Is there a personal connection that you can add / mention?"
- "Here is something that I'd add..." / "Here is something that I'd take out..."
- "Are you planning on adding some video or an interview into your presentation?"
- "Who can you interview?" (Is there someone local or reachable who helps or has helped with this cause?)
- "Are you planning on putting a video of your interview into the presentation?"
- "Have you participated or are you going to participate in an event with this organization? Pictures of you at the event?"
- "What are you planning to do to make this something other than you talking the whole time? What are you adding into the presentation?
- "Here is something else that you can do to make the presentation interesting and creative..."
- "What are you doing to make this persuasive?" (Emotional Appeal) / "Here is something that you can do to make this more persuasive..." (Emotional Appeal)
- "Here's what you need to do to show that you sincerely care about this topic..." (Remember not to be so dramatic that you seem insincere.)
- (For editorial 1) "Are you making a strong enough connection to The Declaration of Human Rights and will that be clear in your speech?"
- (For editorial 1) "Do you have a specific organization selected that represents the issue that you are discussing?"
- (For editorial 2) "How have you clearly shown the problem in a way that isn't common or obviously evident to someone who hasn't been asked to do research?"
- For editorial 2) Is the information presented common knowledge that wouldn't require much research or was it interesting and new?
- (For editorial 3) "What is your action step? What can we realistically do to help?
- (For editorial 3) "Here are some ideas for a stronger / more realistic action step." (Something other than just donating money or a phone number to call.)
- (For editorial 3) Everyone in the group is expected to get your speech rubric out and read over it. What questions do you have? What will be the hardest part?
- (For editorial 3) How are you going to take this information and organize it in a persuasive and interesting way?
Bottom Line: Show the Problem / Persuasively Advocate for an Organization or Activity That Provides Support and Solutions for the Problem /
Persuade Us to Act for the Cause and Show Us How We Realistically Can Help

"What a Year" Research Presentation
This will count for two English grades. The outline and Work's Cited grade will average as a double "minor" grade. The presentation will average in with next quarter's grades as a "major" grade.
For all PowerPoints: No more than six lines of text per slide and no more than (approximately) six words per line.
Don't let your PowerPoint content run out before your verbal content ends. Don't stay on the last slide so long that it appears you didn't finish the PowerPoint.
On speech due dates, I will expect you to use note cards for your presentation AND have a detailed outline to give to me to have while you are presenting. Failure to have a separate copy for me will result in a deduction.
