Summary of pp. 124-142:
Winston and Julia meet in the countryside. They talk a bit in the hideout that Julia has frequented with other men. They walk to the edge of a pasture, which Winston remembers from his dreams as the Golden Country. A bird lands on a branch near the couple, and Winston muses on its presence. The Golden Country where Winston and Julia meet alone for the first time is the symbolic motif that developed when Winston dreamed earlier in the novel about Julia being there and flinging off her clothes. The bird in the pasture is clearly a symbol for freedom — the kind of freedom that Winston desires. "For whom, for what, was that bird singing?" Winston asks himself. "No mate, no rival was watching it. What made it sit at the edge of a lonely wood and pour its music into nothingness?" These are questions Winston should be asking himself of his new relationship with Julia and, in fact, of his relationship with Big Brother. The bird is everything Winston is not but wishes to be.
Returning to the hideout, Winston and Julia have a physical relationship. Winston learns just how much Julia is against the party even though she publicly pretends otherwise. They then talk about how physical / sexual relationships are acts of rebellion against the government. Julia reveals that she is twenty-six-years-old, lives in a hostel with thirty other girls, and had her first sexual encounter when she was sixteen with a sixty-year-old Party member who later committed suicide to avoid arrest. Winston later decides to rent a room above the old antique shop (Mr. Charrington's shop) for his affair with Julia. Waiting for Julia, Winston recognizes a song that a prole woman below his window is singing — a popular song written by a versificator — a machine that writes songs with no human intervention. He muses on the folly of taking the room and what it will eventually mean — capture and death.
- "She did not understand that there was no such thing as happiness, that the only victory lay in the far future, long after you were dead,
that from the moment of declaring war on the party was better to think of yourself as a corpse." p. 135
"We are the dead," he said p. 135
"We're not dead yet," said Julia prosaically. p. 136
Summary of pp. 184-220:
In the room at Mr. Charrington’s, Winston reads through Goldstein’s The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, given to him by O’Brien. This lengthy book, with chapter titles taken from party slogans such as “WAR IS PEACE” and “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH,” traces a theory of social classes throughout recent history: High Class, Middle Class, and Low Class—the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. According to the manifesto, Eurasia was created when Russia subsumed all of Europe, Oceania was created when the United States absorbed the British Empire, and Eastasia is made up of the remaining nations. These three nations keep their respective populaces preoccupied with a perpetual border war in order to preserve power among the High class. Goldstein writes that the war never advances significantly, as no two allied nations can defeat the third. The war is simply a fact of life that enables the ruling powers to keep the masses ignorant of life in other places—the real meaning of the phrase “WAR IS PEACE.” "He has still, he reflected, not learned the ultimate secret. He understood how; he did not understand why." (p. 217)
The two sections that Winston reads from in the book are called The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. This rambling political treatise incorporates several views, including those of Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky, on economic theory, class struggle, and other socio-political issues. This section also gives the reader more insight into the history and ideology of Oceania. By including this excerpt, Orwell stalls the action of the story in order to emphasize its anti-totalitarianism stance. In addition, the book shows that the entire world is basically the same as Oceania, although the two other countries call their brands of totalitarianism by different names.
As Winston reads, Julia enters the room and flings herself into his arms. She is casually glad to know that he has the book. After half an hour in bed together, during which they hear the red-armed woman singing outside, Winston reads to Julia from the book. Goldstein explains that the control of history is a central tool of the Party. He adds that doublethink allows Inner Party members to be the most zealous about pursuing the war mentality, even though they know the falsity of the histories they write. Winston finally asks Julia if she is awake—she is not—and falls asleep himself. His last thought is that “sanity is not statistical.”
While Winston lies in bed the next morning, the red-armed woman outside begins to sing, waking Julia. Winston looks at the woman through the window, admires her fertility, and imagines that the proles will one day give rise to a race of conscious, independent individuals who will throw off the yoke of Party control. Winston and Julia look at the woman and realize that although they are doomed, she might hold the key to the future. Both Winston and Julia say, “We are the dead.”
The prole woman who Winston once saw as dumb and ignorant now comes back as "beautiful" and is a symbol for the freedom that he and Julia will never have. The prole woman's singing recalls the bird that the couple saw that first day they met, the symbol of ultimate freedom and action for action's sake. Winston remarks that the bird was singing for them on that day, but Julia realizes that the bird was singing just to sing, nothing more.

Serial Podcast Information

genius.com (Search "serial" and you can find a transcript of each episode.)
A high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school in 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland. A month later, her body was found in a city park. She'd been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others
Sarah Koenig sorted through thousands of documents, listened to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talked to everyone she could find who remembered what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee. She discovered that the trial covered up a far more complicated story than the jury – or the public – ever got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence — all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.
Note: The purpose of this is unit is to analyze a story in a different form of media than you normally hear. You will enhance your listening skills, your analytical skills, and you will be required to make inferences on your analysis. You should also come to a better understanding of our judicial system.

2-Minute Drill In-Class Activity
The point in this exercise is to emphasize the ability to think quickly, to divide a topic into two or more main points, and to apply one’s present knowledge to a speech topic for 2-4 minutes. You are expected to competently deliver the speech with specific components that we have learned and practiced in this class. You are also supposed to listen to your classmates and offer helpful feedback for them. Sometimes you will do these in small groups and sometimes we will call you to the front of the class and assign you a topic for an impromptu speech.
-One person stands up (Yes, you must stand to get credit).
-The person gets 3 topics from group member.
-The person has one-minute to formulate a speech with intro / good content / transitions / proper closure that doesn't drop the audience.
-One person will time and raise her/his hand once the person has hit the two minute mark and the speaker will begin to wrap it up within the next 2 minutes.
-The person will sit down and receive feedback from the audience on the delivery (volume, pace, eye contact, body language etc)
You will lose class participation points if you are doing the following:
Not paying attention during a classmate's presentation, not giving sincere feedback, using phone for texting/social media, not being on-task,
not giving your best effort during a speech (not trying), sitting around between presentations without someone immediately continuing the process.
Discussing a topic that isn't school appropriate, using profanity.
Can you use technology at all? Yes, if it fits. If you are talking about your favorite song or scene from a show, if it is on low-volume, it may be ok to use technology if you get permission before doing it..
Otherwise, this isn't a speech you use with props etc.
Click here for a Two-minute Drill rubric and a list of other topic choices.
Make these fun & interesting. (Best movie you've seen recently, a reflection of sports season, favorite band, favorite song, best concert you've been to, a current event,
a school event, the big game/performance that just happened or is going to happen, most unique talent, what you did last weekend, ideal date, thing you are most proud of, thing you are interested in, College, what you are doing cool in the future, favorite tv episode, life hack tips, best date, favorite movie characters,
funny family story, funny friend story, etc).
You can go a lot of ways with this. For example, if someone says as a possible topic, "Harry Potter." I could talk about the movies, or the books, the characters, or even my personal memories that I had with my family about going to the midnight premiers or "Harry Potter World." You get the topic and make it work for you in the most interesting way.
If someone gives you the topic of "college," you could discuss your school, your major, the social scene, the sports teams, your roommate, where you are living, what you hope to get involved with, past experiences you've had visiting that school, academics, what you are worried about the most, what you think it will be like. So there are a lot of directions you can go with any topic.

You should include pictures! Have fun with this and don't burn bridges and make this a positive look back. Go out with thoughtfulness, wit, and class.
You must have a detailed outline or a copy of your speech attached to your rubric on the due date or points will be deducted.
For all PowerPoints, no more than six lines of text per slide and no more than (approximately) six words per line.
Don't let your PowerPoint content run out before your verbal content ends. Don't stay on the last slide so long that it appears you didn't finish the PowerPoint.
On speech due dates, I will expect you to use note cards for your presentation AND have a detailed outline to give to me to have while you are presenting. Failure to have a separate copy for me will result in a deduction.
- Note: You can't use your phone for notes. If you need notes, they must be on index cards. Be sure to keep the index cards at waist-level.
